Growing up in a Christian based home in the African-American community during the 90’s, fasting and praying were the suggested remedies given out amongst her peers who were struggling with stress, anxiety, depression, or emotional instability. Believing that there had to be more to it, Bethea majored in Psychology and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in order to educate herself on mental health as well as begin a conversation around it through her faith. However, although she understood how mental and emotional illness could become one’s story, she still never thought that she would have her own battle with it upon embarking on the most beautiful journey known as motherhood.

“Dear New Mom” is a collection of journal entries from Bethea, as well as some of her closest mom friends, written to create a “Me Too” moment amongst others embarking on the most fulfilling, but also trying, journey they will ever experience. Postpartum Depression is not something to be ashamed of, but something that needs to be addressed and discussed to help women know that with the support of others, a strong faith, and practical tips, they too can make it through. A devotional coupled with scriptures and daily affirmations, “Dear New Mom” will also serve as a personal journal for readers to be able to capture their own thoughts and feelings as God does a work in their heart.
